The BUFORI History

Birth of a Dream

George Bernard Shaw once said, "Some people see things as they are, and say, "Why?" I dream of things that never were and say, "Why not?" One day in 1986, Gerry Khouri, the younger brother of Anthony and George, thought why not try something that most people only dreamed of trying. He started to work on realising his dream by building a car on his own. Gerry wanted the car to embody the elements of class, elegance and fun. The first BUFORI was completed in Gerry's own garage in late 1986. Seeing the beautiful result and the immense public attention this car immediately attracted, the family decided that it would continue with this project and provide the financial support and infrastructure for Gerry to produce two more of these very special sports cars for his two brothers. The increase in attention from the public towards the BUFORI gave birth to the idea of establishing a manufacturing facility which would produce this very special hand-made sports car. In 1987, a factory was commissioned in the Sydney suburbs of Merrylands near the city of Parramatta where specially selected and highly qualified personnel were employed to begin production. A R&D operation was set up to produce different BUFORI models for production, as well as for the development of new technologies and prototypes of new production models.

Timeless Classics

Although these very special cars enjoy the classic 1930's looks, they are not reproductions or copies of any other cars. By retaining the look of the 1930's they are timeless classics. From the very onset, the special and distinct market advantage BUFORI has and continues to enjoy is the fact that all of these cars were completely and totally hand crafted. During its entire time in Australia, all BUFORI vehicles were handcrafted to meet the extremely stringent Australian Design Rules (ADR's). The result of this compliance was that BUFORI cars were able to receive immediate acceptance in nearly every country into which they were exported and for seven consecutive years, BUFORI was the only company producing vehicles in Australia to enjoy the prestige of being licensed by the Advance Australia Council to carry the 'Australian Made' logo. In spite of the fact that the roots of this company were conceived in the dreams and joys of a simple hobby, both this extraordinary project have actually come to life as a genuine full time business venture. Employing scores of highly qualified and experienced craftsmen, training new people to become supreme tradesmen and creating new technologies and models, all BUFORI vehicles are now destined to become even more sought after by an ever increasing number of BUFORI owners around the world.

Export Opportunities

BUFORI quickly began exporting their very special sports cars around the world and winning prestigious export awards for achieving success in what would normally be considered to be 'impossible' circumstances. With the ever-increasing demands of local and export sales during those first ten years of manufacture in Australia, the rapid expansion into four even larger factories became essential. Transfer of Technology to Malaysia In March 1992 at an exhibition in Pulau Langkawi, former Prime Minister of Malaysia YM Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed announced that he wanted BUFORI Motor Car Company Pty. Ltd. to move to Malaysia and thus began a journey by placing Malaysia as a producer of high end quality vehicles on the international automotive industry. With a team of brand new work force, Gerry together with his brothers' unceasing support, began producing and delivering the BUFORI MKII, to local and overseas buyers. Whilst producing the BUFORI MKII, Gerry and his team of talented craftsmen and engineers began development work on a new model, the BUFORI La JOYA. The company has taken a quantum leap from where it started with its first model. The BUFORI La JOYA was designed, developed and produced with the best components and high quality materials and to international standards. This model was also designed and engineered for repeatability and ease of maintenance incorporating new technologies.

To Where we are Today

Today, two decades after the first BUFORI was produced, the Khouri brothers have kept their facility in Malaysia. Housed under one roof, the Malaysian operations include a showroom, sales and distribution arm, production, as well as research and development facilities. Since the inception of the first BUFORI, each model has evolved through the years with the latest addition being the BUFORI La JOYA. A masterpiece in its own right, this new addition to the family is a contemporary classic that discreetly embodies state of the art technology providing uncompromised safety, security and performance with luxurious finishing for its discerning owners. The new BUFORI has been able to break into international markets, like Australia, Europe, USA, and the Middle East, with distributors and dealers around the world to assist with the high demand for international sales. From the very beginning and continuing to date, the enormous volumes of prime editorial media coverage have been most complimentary, giving positive praise and encouragement in this breath-taking adventure. BUFORI has always been a statement of pride. It is about pride of development, pride of manufacture, pride of uniqueness and ultimately pride of ownership. They say that if being different is being special, then BUFORI will always strive to be very special.
